Ricco Deruta is a traditional Italian ceramic collection made in Deruta, a hill town and comune in the province of Perugia in the Umbria region of central Italy. Deruta remains known for its ceramics and as the centre of refined majolica glazed Deruta pottery. The local clay is perfect for ceramics, where production began in the early middle ages, but found its artistic peak in the 15th and early 16th century, with highly characteristic local styles of majolica.
The Ricco design, meaning 'rich' in Italian dates back to the Renaissance. This classic Ricco Deruta pattern that reflects acanthus leaves and flowers is inspired by Perugino's paintings, one of the most important Italian artists of the 6th century.
We have handpicked gorgeous majolica Italian ceramic pieces to be handcrafted in Deruta Italy especially for Piccola® Australia. These pieces are all hand painted by talented artisans and are the result of authentic and original Italian ceramic craftsmanship that have been produced by the same family business for over 50 years.
Raffaellesco is a unique and so called lucky Italian ceramic collection made in Deruta, Umbria. In the 16th century Deruta produced the so-called "Rafaellesque" ware, decorated with fine arabesques and grottesche on a fine white ground. Deruta, with Gubbio and Urbino, continue to produce some of the finest Italian majolica ceramics in the world.
The Raffaellesco pattern was inspired by Raphael’s 16th century frescoes in the Vatican palace. The Dragon which is the central motif of the pattern is believed to symbolise a benevolent deity who bestowed good luck and fair winds to seagoing merchants,
The Raffaeilescoe sea creature is said to have rescued sailors trapped in a dead calm by blowing on the trapped ship's sails, thus the puffs of wind steaming from the dragon's mouth. Today, many Italians believe that having a piece of Raffaellesco majolica Italian ceramic in your home brings blessings and good fortune.
Alcantara is a Mediterranean lemons ceramic collection made in Deruta Central Italy and is one of the most popular designs today. Deruta remains known for its Italian ceramics and as the centre of refined majolica Deruta pottery.
The Alcantara pattern, is a vibrant Mediterranean design inspired by the popular lemons of Italy. Medieval Italian cooks realised that lemons were more than just a pretty scent; they used them in sweet and savoury dishes. Lemons did more than make food delicious; their high acidity also helped preserve foods. Lemons are found in many majolica Italian ceramic designs throughout Italy..
These majolica Italian ceramic pieces are handcrafted and hand painted by individual artisans therefore no two pieces are exactly the same. The minor variations add to the character of the pottery pieces and which makes them unique and special. We're proud to bring authentic majolica Italian ceramics to Australia and can be viewed at our Italian gifts store in Sydney.
